How to move your TV Licence to a new address
A TV Licence covers an address, not a person. Change the address online and the same licence carries on at your new home. You can do it up to 3 months before you move.
- When
- Any time from 3 months before you move to your first week in
- How long
- About 5 minutes
- Cost
- Free
What you'll need
- Your TV Licence number (or your surname and the postcode on the licence)
- Your new address and move date
What to do
Go to TV Licensing's change of address page
Sign in with your licence number. If you can't find it, your surname and the postcode on the licence will do.
Give your new address and the date you move
The licence switches to the new address from that date.
Don't cancel it
TV Licensing asks people not to cancel when they move. You don't need a new licence, only a new address on the one you have.
If you skip this
Your licence only covers the address on it, so your new home would show as unlicensed. Watching live TV or BBC iPlayer without a licence can mean a fine of up to £1,000.
Where to do it
Questions people ask
- Do I need a TV Licence at all?
- You need one to watch or record live TV on any channel or service, or to use BBC iPlayer. You don't need one if you only watch on-demand services such as Netflix.
- We're moving in with someone who already has a licence. What then?
- One licence covers a household. Check TV Licensing's guidance on refunds for the licence you no longer need.
