How to tell your bank and your employer you've moved
Change your address on every account that holds your money, and tell your employer. Most banks let you do it in their app in a couple of minutes.
- When
- In your first week at the new address
- How long
- About 20 minutes in total
- Cost
- Free
What you'll need
- A list of every bank, credit card, savings and pension account you have
- Your new address
- Your work HR or payroll contact
What to do
List every account
Current accounts, credit cards, savings, ISAs, loans, pensions and store cards. Check your banking apps and old statements so you don't miss one.
Update each one
Most banks have a "change address" option in the app or online banking. Some will text or ring you to confirm it's really you.
Tell HR or payroll at work
This keeps your payslips and your P60 (your end-of-year tax summary) going to the right place.
Don't forget the quiet ones
Old pensions and savings accounts you rarely look at are the ones that get left behind. Write to them if they have no online account.
If you skip this
New cards and letters about your money can go to your old address, which is a security risk as well as a nuisance.
Questions people ask
- Should I update my address before or after I move?
- Around moving day is best. Too early and a new card could arrive at the new place before you do; too late and it goes to the old one.
- Does telling my employer update HMRC?
- Don't rely on it. Tell HMRC yourself as well.
