How to tell your car insurer you're moving
Tell your insurer your new address before you move. Where the car is kept affects the price, so your premium may go up or down.
- When
- 1 to 2 weeks before you move
- How long
- About 15 minutes
- Cost
- Your price may change, and some insurers charge a fee for changing a policy
What you'll need
- Your policy number
- Your new address and move date
- Where the car will be kept overnight (drive, garage or street)
What to do
Contact your insurer before moving day
Most let you change your address in their app or online account. Give the date the change should start.
Tell them where the car will be parked
A garage, a driveway and the street are priced differently. If your commute changes a lot, mention your new mileage too.
Check the new price
If the price goes up sharply and your renewal is close, it's a good moment to compare other insurers.
If you skip this
If the address on your policy is wrong, your insurer could refuse to pay a claim or treat the policy as invalid. Driving without valid insurance is against the law.
Questions people ask
- Will my price go up?
- It can go either way. Insurers price by area and by where the car is kept, so you won't know until you ask.
- Do I need to tell them if I'm only moving down the road?
- Yes. The policy is tied to the address, however short the move.
