How to tell HMRC you've moved house
Update your address with HMRC online or in the HMRC app. Telling your employer isn't the same thing, so do both.
- When
- In your first week at the new address
- How long
- About 10 minutes
- Cost
- Free
What you'll need
- Your Government Gateway sign-in details, or the HMRC app
- Your new address and the date you moved
What to do
Sign in on gov.uk or open the HMRC app
Go to "Tell HMRC about a change to your personal details" and choose the address option.
Enter your new address
If you send a Self Assessment tax return, your details there are updated once you've reported the change.
Running a business? Update that separately
HMRC says business records have to be changed separately from your personal ones.
If you skip this
Tax letters can go to your old address: tax code changes, Self Assessment reminders and refunds. You could miss a deadline without knowing about it.
Where to do it
Questions people ask
- My employer has my new address. Do I still need to tell HMRC?
- Yes. It's safest to tell HMRC directly so its records are right.
- I don't have a Government Gateway account. What can I do?
- You can set one up when you start, or use the HMRC app, which lets you report a change of address.
